A High-Tech Turntable Converts Tree Rings Into Piano Music

Bartholomäus Traubeck rigged up a PlayStation eye camera on a modified phonograph arm, and then pointed it at “records” made of thin cross-sections of trees. A computer then converts the thickness, color and particular shape into a piano tone. The most interesting part is when the eye encounters an imperfection, and the music bridges on chaos before returning to the more orderly ring patterns.

A truly awesome blend of nature, science and music.
